The Role of Licensed Practical Nurses in Psychedelic Therapy
Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) play a critical role in ensuring patient safety, comfort, and overall well-being throughout medicine-assisted psychedelic therapy sessions. Their clinical expertise, trauma-informed approach, effective communication, and ability to respond to dynamic patients need help foster a therapeutic environment that supports healing and transformation. LPNs contribute to treatment success by conducting health assessments, monitoring adverse reactions, collaborating with interprofessional teams, and providing compassionate, culturally sensitive care before, during, and after each session.
Education Requirements:
Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program.
Certification:
LPN’s must be a regulated member under the Health Professions Act , be registered with College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) and hold a valid practicing license. Licensing requirements include completing a specific number of supervised clinical hours and passing a licensing examination.
Additional certifications or training in psychiatric nursing, mental health nursing, or related fields can provide specialized knowledge relevant to supporting individuals undergoing psychedelic therapy, for example, Introduction to Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy.
Training/Qualifications:
LPNs working in our mental health setting should have additional training or certifications in psychiatric nursing or mental health support to enhance their competency in supporting individuals undergoing psychedelic-assisted therapies.
- Prior experience in settings dealing with mental health issues or therapeutic interventions for mental health diagnosis is advantageous (> 2 Years).
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
- Completion of trauma-informed care training or equivalent experience working in trauma-sensitive environments (preferred).
- Mental health first aid (preferred).
Responsibilities:
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) supports patients with mental health conditions—both acute and chronic, such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD—within a psychedelic-assisted therapy setting.
Core responsibilities include:
- Delivering compassionate, patient-centered care grounded in ethical and culturally competent practice.
- Conducting initial and ongoing medical and mental health assessments of patient needs and adapting care accordingly.
- Supporting patient education, orientation and contributing to reflective care planning and progress tracking.
- Ensuring adherence to clinical protocols, safety standards, and regulatory guidelines.
- Participating in continuous quality improvement, including clinical documentation, reporting, and equipment calibration.
Duties and Tasks:
To meet the above responsibilities, the LPN will:
- Complete individualized medical and mental health assessments focused on current patient condition and clinical presentation.
- Administer treatments and procedures as prescribed by the physician.
- Teach patients symptom management strategies and assist in developing care plans aligned with therapy goals.
- Monitor and reprioritize patient care based on changes in condition or therapeutic progress.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all patient interactions and services delivered.
- Follow clinic protocols, policies, and procedures to support a consistent standard of care.
- Perform quality assurance tasks including equipment calibration and maintenance checks.

ATMA CENA is excited to offer a unique opportunity for independent contract therapists, looking to expand or start their practice in relation to the field of psychedelic medicine, while fully adhering to all legal and regulatory requirements. ATMA CENA clinics serve as innovative mental health centers that provide both traditional therapy services and legally compliant psychedelic-assisted therapy programs.
Therapists joining ATMA CENA can choose between two distinct streams:
1. Private Practice within a Psychedelic Therapy Center: Continue your existing counseling practice within a fully equipped clinic environment that offers comprehensive administrative support and access to legally permitted services, such as Ketamine Assisted Therapy, Psilocybin and MDMA Assisted Therapy through the SAP and rTMS.
New Office Spaces (windows and non-window) varying monthly rates. Free parking, and central location.
• Must be licensed or certified for independent clinical practice (provisional therapists welcome to apply).
• Must maintain at least $5,000,000 in professional liability insurance.
• Attractive fee-sharing model.

These streams are ideal for skilled clinicians who thrive in a collaborative environment and are eager to expand their practice within the emerging field of psychedelic therapy, whether they currently operate privately or work in public or agency settings and are interested in transitioning to private practice.

JOB TITLE: Nurse Practitioner
Casual (In-person & Virtual): Edmonton area or Calgary area
OVERVIEW:
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides advanced clinical care to individuals and groups within a psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy program. The NP is responsible for comprehensive assessment, clinical decision-making, and ongoing management of patient care, with a strong focus on safety, appropriateness, and continuity of treatment.
The NP works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and is supported by an in-house medical team that includes general practitioners and psychiatrists. The role includes providing clinical leadership, patient and family education, and psychological and physical support throughout the program. The NP may also provide clinical guidance and oversight to assigned team members, as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Nurse Practitioners are fundamentally responsible for meeting the service expectations of our facility including but not limited to:
Conduct comprehensive physical and mental health assessments to determine suitability and readiness for psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.
Develop, implement, and adjust individualized treatment plans using evidence-based clinical judgment.
Prescribe and manage medications and therapeutic interventions within scope of practice.
Monitor patient safety, vital signs, and mental status during therapy sessions and provide clinical interventions as needed.
Collaborate with physicians, therapists, nurses, and clinic leadership to coordinate care and participate in case reviews.
Educate patients and families on treatment expectations, benefits, risks, and informed consent.
Support patients in integrating therapeutic experiences and connect them with appropriate follow-up resources.
Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory and clinic standards.
Ensure compliance with legal, ethical, infection prevention, and clinic policies.
Engage in ongoing review of emerging evidence and contribute to clinical knowledge-sharing within the team.
RATE OF PAY:
$60/hr to $70/hr
