Are there conditions or circumstances where rTMS is not recommended?

rTMS is not recommended for individuals with metal implants in or near the head (except dental fillings), such as aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, or deep brain stimulators. It’s contraindicated for people with a history of seizures or epilepsy, as the treatment may slightly increase seizure risk. Other exclusions include individuals with active substance use disorders, severe cognitive impairment, or unstable medical conditions. Pregnancy isn’t an absolute contraindication, but the safety hasn’t been extensively studied. Always discuss your complete medical history with your healthcare provider to determine if rTMS is appropriate for you.
