Is Psychedelic Therapy Legal in Australia?

Legal / regulated access

Australia currently offers a lawful pathway to supervised therapeutic use of at least one psychedelic.

Status by substance

Statuses reflect lawful access for supervised therapeutic use — not recreational legality. Last reviewed 2026-06.

Legal / regulated access

Medical-only: from 1 July 2023 psychiatrists authorised under the TGA Authorised Prescriber scheme may prescribe psilocybine (Schedule 8) for treatment-resistant depression in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy; remains Schedule 9 (prohibited) for all other uses.

Ibogaine

Legal / regulated access

Prescription-only: ibogaine is Schedule 4 (Prescription Only Medicine) in the Poisons Standard since 2010, so it may lawfully be prescribed/used under medical supervision, though no approved product is marketed and import requires ODC/TGA permits. Some sources cite Schedule 9 historically — confidence medium.
